Embassy Update

The page is dedicated to all of the various wrinkles the US Embassy in Bangkok put into the Visa process. As I am in the unique position of being in constant contact with the Embassy (in person, via the phone, and internet), I thought it would be helpful to share some of my insights about what is happening day-to-day at the Embassy.

Immigration Staff Recently (re) Trained

The immigration staff here in Bangkok (the men and women who will actually be processing the application for interview) have just returned from training. Just like any organization that trains their employees, the US government has put the fear of God into the inspectors and wants them to do things by the book. If you are used to a laid back mai pen rai system at the Embassy, that is not the case right now. Be on guard. However, like everything else, this too shall pass.

Change in Medical Requirements

The Embassy now insists that all applicants for a K1 or K3 under 26 years of age receive a vaccination for HPV (the Human Papillomavirus). Although I have no problem with his per se, it would be nice if they gradually phased this in. Instead, they sprung it on people thinking the medical fee would be 4,500 baht when it will cost double that for those effected by the new regulation.

Petitioners Must Acknowledge Fiancee’s Children

If the children are not mentioned on the petition to USCIS, then the US citizen petitioner will have to sign a letter acknowledging that he knows his fiancée has kids. I dealt with this personally and they won’t budge, it must be an original signed letter. My suggestion: put the kids on the original petition and still sign a letter and submit it as an original at the time of the interview. For more information see: Bring children to the US.
